CHIOSTRI DI SAN PIETRO
The Cloisters of San Pietro house an interesting museum, cultural and artistic laboratory. The historic walls of the former Benedictine monastery of St. Peter's date back to the 16th century. It is a remarkable example of Italian Renaissance architecture in the heart of Reggio Emilia, bearing the signature of Giulio Romano, Italian painter, architect and decorator. It has now been transformed into a cultural center with numerous exhibition rooms. Behind a neoclassical façade, the Little Cloister, built between 1524 and 1525 by Bartolomeo Spani, has recently been restored, and original frescoes have been uncovered after a layer of lime from the 1950s was removed. The Grand Cloister, built some sixty years later by Prospero and Francesco Pacchioni, is Mannerist in style, with embossed walls, spandrel windows and niches decorated with imposing statues of Benedictine saints.
