As a result of global warming at high altitude, this glacier - one of Europe's largest skiable glaciers - is losing its thickness, making it impossible to ski in July and August. So, depending on conditions, it's a late spring/early summer opening to enjoy this unique site. After taking the Jandri Express and a sub-glacial funicular, you can climb the Dôme de Puy-Sallié to an altitude of 3,421 metres, opening up a superb panorama from the Belvédère des Écrins. Pedestrian access for a unique walk on the heights.

ESPACE DIAMANT

1 review

The Espace Diamant ski area comprises 6 village resorts, including the charming Praz-sur-Arly, with a skiable area stretching from 1,000 to 2,069 meters above sea level, between the Beaufortain massif, the Val d'Arly and the Mont-Blanc region: 192 kilometers of downhill skiing, 170 trails, 82 lifts, 123 kilometers of Nordic skiing, as well as 5 snowparks and 3 boardercrosses make up this vast winter sports area, which is more than equal to the biggest in the Alps. Located 4 kilometers from Megève, the Praz-sur-Arly ski area focuses on family activities that are accessible to all: downhill and Nordic skiing, and new winter sports. Nostalgic skiers will appreciate an introduction to the yooner, the modernized version of the paret, a toboggan with one runner, or ski joëring, pulled by a horse. The ski school runs a "snow garden" area for ages 3 and up. From the age of 8, snowshoeing is the perfect way to discover animal tracks. More unusual and for all ages, a hot-air balloon flight over the Alps for an unforgettable day. For those who prefer to keep their feet on the ground and watch the majestic ballet of the balloons, the "montgolfiades" bring the resort to life every January. In summer, the Espace Diamant opens its trails to mountain bikers, trail runners and hikers, who enjoy a unique panorama of the Mont-Blanc chain. A sparkling, multi-faceted area, like a Diamond, an exceptional outdoor playground for vacations in all seasons.

An original golf course, since it is the only cross-border course - you start playing in France and finish in Italy at Clavières - and it "crosses" the snow front (without snow, of course...) of the Montgenèvre resort. An international 18-hole, Par 67 course (5.5 km) that's truly unique and offers a wide variety of shots. If you prefer to stay on the French side of things, there's also a compact 9-hole course in a lovely wood. Children's learning zone with putting green.

OBSERVATOIRE DES BARONNIES PROVENCALES

Astronomy
4/5
1 review

There are few amateur observatories in France that have been designed and optimized for observing and capturing astronomical images, because such a challenge is an absolute desire to master the entire parameters of infrastructure creation and management necessary for such a project, since the initial search of the best possible observation site (lack of light pollution, number of nights released per year, accessibility, altitude), until the best instruments, glasses and telescopes are put in place, through accommodation, catering, ancillary activities, training, and rates accessible but compatible with thethe financial efforts made by its initiators. In this little game, it can be said that the Provençal Baronies Observatory makes a mistake, with its first-class location benefiting from an exceptional sky and infrastructure (coughing and hardware) to dream more than an observer, even very warned! This observatory is more readily intended for observers who want to benefit from a first-class instrumentation for specific, sometimes sharp work purposes, focusing particularly on the taking of difficult objects from deep sky (nebulous and galaxies for example). But the observatory is also aimed at basic observers who want to live a few days in this magical place, as well as visiting visitors who come only for the day or the evening. Several services are offered, especially in July and August, such as the dome evenings, night and night-ends, visits and discoveries, etc. These services, especially those that integrate the accommodation, are the best level and will delight demanding tourists. With 260 nights on average released a year, the discovery of the sky on site is truly spectacular.

A company whose name is intertwined with the history of mountaineering, and above all the best address to find qualified and passionate guides. Because of overcrowding, ropes without certified professional guides become risky. Calling on these experienced guides is therefore a guarantee of safety. Some multi-day ski tours are for experienced skiers and the ascent of Mont Blanc cannot be improvised, a real physical and technical preparation is necessary. Hiking, climbing, snowboarding, heli-skiing, snowshoeing, tour of Mont Blanc, many packages are offered, for all levels, summer and winter: TMB (Tour du Mont-Blanc) in 5 days with an option to carry a bag; the mountains and wonders of the Aosta Valley in 6 days; more affordable, for families, the Chamonix Valley in five days; an introduction to mountaineering in three days, etc. With almost two centuries of history (it was created in 1821), the Compagnie des Guides de Chamonix-Mont-Blanc has become a true legend. The mountain house, which also houses the French Ski School and the Cham'Aventure company, offers a free information point, the Office de Haute Montagne. Three weather reports are posted here every day, just like at the neighboring tourist office: always highly recommended before any outing, on any terrain, even if it is considered easy. STATION SAINT-PIERRE

Mountain and winter sports

With a vertical drop of almost one kilometer, some twenty runs and an accessible ski pass, the Saint-Pierre-de-Chartreuse resort offers a wide variety of winter sports. It's the "big" downhill ski resort in the Chartreuse massif. Last year, to reduce energy consumption, access to the slopes was via Le Planolet and Combe de l'Ours. For Nordic skiing: 50 km to Saint-Hugues, plus the 25 km round trip Saint-Hugues - Le Sappey - as part of the Chartreuse traverse. In summer, the resort has prepared trails for mountain biking.
