Drakona, 25 km from Hania, is home to around 50 inhabitants who make a living from producing oil, honey, wine and livestock. According to the elders, a path links the village to Sfakia, through the hills which, fortunately for beekeeping (30 tonnes of honey a year), retain their wealth of wild flora. The region boasts several caves, including Gré. Another, of the same name, is at altitude, in Madara, while Nerospilios (water cave) is near the village. In the middle of Drakona, you can admire the beautiful, ornate, hand-carved wooden temple of the ancient chapel dedicated to St. George, restored in 1833.
