Set at an altitude of 878 m and surrounded by forests, Elšani is a fairly recent village. It was built around 1850 around the 15th-century church of St. Elias (Црква Св. Илија). Renovated in the 19th century, it no longer features any ancient frescoes (the interior was repainted in 1944). The inhabitants live mainly from agriculture and timber harvesting. Most families also produce wine and rakija. Tourism has recently developed. As the village is close to the beaches of Peštani, there are now restaurants serving farmed fish and accommodation such as the Risto(ristosguesthouse.com) and Šoposki ([email protected]) guesthouses. Elšani is also the starting point for several hiking trails through the Galičica National Park. An easier option is to walk to the Vršek spring (300 m to the east), which has supplied the village with water since 1974. But the most beautiful route is to the "Bulgarian Peak". It offers plunging views of both Lake Ohrid and the Prespa Lakes.
