Përmet/Përmeti (pronounced "peurmète"/"peurmeti") has a population of around 5,000. It is the seat of the municipality of Përmet (pop. 10,000), which is part of the Gjirokastra district. The town lies 62 km northeast of Gjirokastra(via Këlcyra and Tepelena), 98 km northwest of Ioannina (Greece) and 133 km southwest of Korça(via Erseka and Leskovik). Three daily minibus connections to Gjirokastra, two to Korça.This is undoubtedly the best destination for a nature vacation in Albania. If the town itself is rather gloomy and marked by Communist architecture, the region is magnificent. Situated at just 250 m above sea level, but bordered by the Trebeshina-Dhëmbel-Nemërçka mountain range and the Vjosa river, it is the gateway to two national parks: Hotova-Dangëll Fir and Vjosa. A former Ottoman administrative center created in the 15th century on the site of the ancient Greek town of Trifilia, Përmet was long claimed by Greece and was a partisan stronghold during the Second World War. Nicknamed the "City of Roses", it is today the capital of Albanian ecotourism: cheap accommodation, homestays, campsites, good restaurants, a rich variety of culinary traditions, churches and tekkés, an efficient tourist office, fishing, hiking, horseback riding and a host of agencies offering rafting on the Vjosa, 4 x 4 excursions, climbing, etc.
