Pale/Пале (pronounced "palé") has a population of about 13,500, 98% of which are Bosnian-Serbs. The town is part of the municipality of Istočno Sarajevo, in the Bosnian Serb Republic. It is located 17 km southeast of Sarajevo, 18 km north of the Jahorina ski resort and 22 km east of the Trebević mountain cable car.Former capital of the Serbian Republic of Bosnia (1992-2009), this small, clean town located at 820 m altitude remains off the tourist map. Heavily affected by unemployment, the population eagerly awaits the announced creation of a cable car linking Pale to the slopes of Jahorina.
