Mount Jahorina/Јахорина (pronounced "yarhorina") stands south of Pale and adjoins Mount Trebević. It is located between the municipalities of Pale and Trnovo, within the municipality of Istočno Sarajevo (Bosnian Serb Republic), and the other municipality of Trnovo, which is part of the Canton of Sarajevo (Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina). There are several villages and, above all, the ski resort of Jahorina. It is located 18 km south of Pale and 30 km southeast of the old town of Sarajevo(via Pale). Bus connections: see description. With its steep slopes, 3 m snow depth in winter and an altitude of 1,916 m at Mount Ogorjelica, the Jahorina massif was chosen to host women's alpine skiing at the 1984 Olympics. The competitions were marked by a Swiss gold-silver double in the downhill and by the second and third places of the French Perrine Pelen in the slalom and giant slalom. It is in the footsteps of these champions that we now descend the slopes of the largest ski area in Bosnia-Herzegovina (and the second largest in the former Yugoslavia after Kopaonik, in Serbia). With a season that extends over one hundred and thirty days, the resort now attracts an average of 175,000 skiers each year. One can also take advantage of part of the facilities in summer to go hiking in the forest where the Balkan maple (Acer hyrcanum) dominates up to 1,700 m altitude. Called jarovina in local languages, it is to him that the mountain owes its name.
