Govone is a municipality of just over 2,000 inhabitants halfway between Alba and Asti, in the heart of the Roero region, surrounded by the hills and famous vineyards of the Langhe region, producer of prestigious wines, especially Barolo. The site has been inhabited since Roman times, but became more important when the castle became the royal residence of the House of Savoy at the end of the 18th century. The castle was in the possession of the House of Savoy for a short time, from 1792 to 1870. The young Jean-Jacques Rousseau, barely 18 years old in 1730, stayed in Govone when he was secretary to Count Ottavio Solaro, who owned the castle at the time.
