The town of Vaxholm, located on the island of Vaxön, takes its name from the fortress that was established there in the mid-sixteenth century by King Gustav Vasa, in order to secure the sea access to Stockholm. Wanting to repatriate men to guard the coast, the king invited peasants to settle there, exempting them from taxes on fishing and housing. Thus was born Vaxholm, in 1548, the year of the construction of its fortress. This seaside resort is today a very popular destination during the summer period. Stockholmers on vacation, tourists and adventurers on a trip to the archipelago escape there. The town is full of flowers, terraces and animation, and the wood of its houses and the beautiful landscape that surrounds it make it a very pleasant and picturesque place. In winter as well as in summer, Vaxholm is a destination that allows everyone to discover the wonders of the Stockholm archipelago, through land and water, in a folkloric and local atmosphere. You will find restaurants, bars, galleries, museums, hiking trails, ice rink, beaches, and a fascinating historical center, and will fall under the spell of this colorful town.
