Close to Stockholm, Drottningholm Castle is located on an island in Lake Mälar (Ekerö Island) known as "Queen's Island". The site, comprising three monuments - the castle, the Baroque theater and the Chinese pavilion - has been a Unesco World Heritage Site since 1991. This recognition is based on a number of factors, not least the sumptuousness of the site, a convincing example of a 17th-century royal residence in Northern Europe. From Stockholm, it takes about an hour to reach the site by ferry. You'll need a full day to enjoy both the sights and the surroundings.
