The most frequently heard historical tradition says that the primitive settlers of Pimampiro originated from the Caribbean and the Arawaks, which gave rise to two peoples: the Chapí and the Pimampiros. Pimampiro is made up of five syllables: pi - ma - am - pi - rar, which translates as life, great, water, many and banks, which refers to a city located on the banks of a large river. Some historians indicate that the village was located on the banks of the Pisque River. On June 25, 1824, Pimampiro was recognized as a civil parish, directly inherited from the religious parish, by decree of the Great Colombia.
