3 km north of the city of Ibarra. A historical site, the "Blood Lake" (or "Red Lake") owes its indigenous name to the most cruel battle fought by the Inca invaders against the Caranquis, a tribe of the region. Legend has it that so many bloody Caranquis bodies were thrown into the lake that its waters turned red.Native graves still stand on the heights surrounding the lake, but they were looted long ago. Today, the calm waters are surrounded by peaceful green hills and its shores offer the pleasures of a family Sunday walk. Various restaurants serve farmed trout.
