Travel Guide Millstatt Am See

Located right by the lake, Millstatt am See has an abbey dating back to 1080. This former Benedictine and then Jesuit monastery (from the 16th century) was partially transformed into a hotel in 1773. Under the thousand-year-old lime tree of the abbey's courtyard, justice was once done. The cloister combines Gothic (for the vault) and Romanesque (for the arches) styles and houses a fresco of the Last Judgment, a masterpiece of Austrian Renaissance art. Finally, the abbey church has a remarkable Romanesque portal. Every year in May, Millstatt am See hosts an organ festival.
