599 inhabitants. If the town of Sant Mateu de Bages is at the foot of the Serra de Castelltallat, the vast municipality of Sant Mateu de Bages is made up of five villages: Sant Mateu de Bages, which gives the name to the town, then Castelltallat, Salo, Coaner in the mountains and finally Valls de Torrollea, a former textile factory located near the river, where most of the population lives. The municipality is crossed from east to west by the imposing Serra de Castelltallat, a relief formed by an anticline several kilometres long, partly composed of lacustrine limestone, which gives the massif its grey-blue colour in the parts above 900 metres in altitude. It is an area of natural interest declared by the Generalitat de Catalunya in 2004. The Castelltallat observatory, perched on a natural lookout, offers a breathtaking view of the Pla de Bages and the starry vault. A breathtaking panorama! The whole massif is in general a wonderful natural sanctuary to enjoy walking: one can follow the "Fossil Route", which reveals the geological history of the region.
