Manresa (75,000 inhabitants), capital of Bages, is often considered the heart of Catalonia because of its geographical location, halfway between the mountains and the coast. Located on the left bank of the Cardener river, Manresa, whose origins date back to the 12th century, is today an industrial city that has preserved many modernist buildings and religious monuments from the Baroque period. The city is also famous for having been an important spiritual retreat for Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Jesuits. He lived there for a whole year, praying in a cave and practising the most rigorous asceticism
