The name Gozzano, with about 6,000 inhabitants, comes from the Latin Gaudianum, which can be translated as "place of pleasure". In the Middle Ages, Gozzano was divided into two town centres: the Villa (north-west) and the Vicus (south-east). The market square, which later became Piazza San Giuliano, divided these two districts. In the 10th and 11th centuries, the hill where the Basilica of San Giuliano stands became a fort and then a castle. This municipality is rich in historical remains, including the church of Madonna del Boggio outside the town centre and the church of Santa Maria di Luzzara, with frescoes dating back to the 15th and 16th centuries.
