Twenty miles from Leh. The ruins of the 15th century capital of Ladakh cut the horizon dramatically. The citadel could not withstand the three consecutive years of siege by the Mongol and Tibetan invaders in 1,680. The fort deserves a stop, especially for its three temples dedicated to Maitreya Buddha, the most interesting and the largest being the Chamba Lhakang which contains intact mural paintings. The monasteries began to be restored by the villagers, including the smallest of the three, the Chamchung, which was threatening to collapse. Take a break on the road when you pass the fort, the panorama is well worth it!
