52 km from Leh. This village of just a thousand inhabitants is famous for its 11th-century gompa. Established in 1065 by Lama Duwang Chosje at the request of Lhacen Gyalpo, the fifth king of Ladakh, it belongs to the Gelugpa movement. Rebuilt in the 18th century, it is one of the region's most attractive monasteries, housing around a hundred resident monks. The museum houses an interesting collection of thangkas. When you arrive at Likir, you won't want to miss the impressive golden statue of Maitreya Buddha, recently installed.
