130 km from Leh. The small Yungdrung Tharpaling monastery, a contemporary of Alchi and Lamayuru, is often overlooked by tourists - wrongly so. Close to Lamayuru, it sits on a narrow ridge atop the village of Wanla, alongside the ruins of a 12th-century fort. This gompa, built into the castle in the 16th century, is remarkably well preserved. It is of particular importance in the history of the founding of the kingdom of Ladakh. Local legend has it that Buddha himself passed through the monastery. The Sumstek (sanctuary) contains an impressive 11-headed statue of Avalokitsevara, as well as exquisite wall paintings.
