19 kilometers southwest of Leh. This magnificent 16th-century Gelugpa monastery is made up of a multitude of white buildings (temples and monks' dwellings) nestling on a hill overlooking the village of Thiksey. From here, you can reach the monastery by climbing the rock-cut stairs (15 minutes) or by car. This is one of the most active monasteries in the region. Built in the 16th century, its architecture is admirable. It houses a community of around 90 monks, mainly from Zanskar, the Nubra Valley and Changtang, and young monks from the age of 8-10.
