Starting from Leh, at 3,515 m, the road rises in a lunar landscape, typical of Ladakh. It then climbs up to Khardung La (or Kardong Pass) which culminates at 5,602 m according to Indian army measurements, 5,359 m according to more realistic measurements. It is supposed to be the highest road in the world. The last few kilometres to get there are magnificent and will calm even the most reckless! Once at the top, everyone pauses for a souvenir photo in front of the "Khardung La, The Highest Motorable Road In The World" signs. The Indian army has set up a first-aid post there, as the high altitude can cause nausea for some people. You can also see a beautiful chörten with many Tibetan Buddhist flags of all colors. The panorama is grandiose and the excessiveness of the Himalayan ranges leaves the traveller stunned.
