240 km from Kargil. Once the capital of the Zanskar kingdom, Padum lies at the very end of the road to Kargil, on a plateau surrounded by mountains, at an altitude of 3,505 metres. A starting and finishing point for trekking in the valley, it is also a restful stopover. It is the most densely populated town in Zanskar, with just over a thousand inhabitants. The name of the town comes from the name of Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava). It is possible to stay with local people, an authentic experience that leaves a lasting impression.
