69 km south of Leh. Alchi is a picturesque village on the banks of the Indus, dotted with ancient chörtens. Its traditional architecture and charming atmosphere attract many visitors. There are a number of attractive guesthouses and a restaurant worth visiting in its own right. But Alchi's real attraction is the superb Buddhist temple complex of Choskhor, one of Ladakh's most bewitching sites. It is home to fascinating sculptures and exceptional, remarkably well-preserved wall frescoes from the 11th and 12th centuries. A must-see on the monastery route.
