Situated in a valley and crossed by the River Ter, the town owes its name to its monastery, originally occupied by women and founded by Guilfred the Hairy at the end of the 9th century. When the Arabs were driven out, he wanted to repopulate the area. Together with the adjoining cloister, this monastery is one of the main attractions of the place. As well as the Abbey Palace, in which we will visit a very good interpretation centre explaining, among other things, the personality of the famous Count of Arnau, the cruel one. Note that the former railway station is now a possible starting point for the Greenway of the Iron and Coal Route.
