Located at the confluence of the Freser and Ter rivers, this "comarque" capital grew up around the Benedictine monastery of Santa Maria de Ripoll. Built in the 9th century and the necropolis of many of the region's counts, it is now the town's main attraction, along with its Modernist heritage. Between the 16th and 18th centuries, the town's economy was entirely based on the manufacture of nails and weapons, to the point of being considered one of its main production centers in Europe. With the arrival of the railroads, the town turned to the textile industry, from which it continues to derive a large part of its income.
