A Mayan site whose name means stone maiden, dating from the Pre-Classic period, exploring it provides access to breathtaking views of the entire surrounding region. It served as a Mayan civic ceremonial center in the Belize Valley region during the Late Classic period. At that time, when the region was at its peak, some 200,000 people lived in the Belize Valley. A visit to the Xunantunich site is one of the major activities near San Ignacio. Passengers on cruise ships docking in Belize City go there even for a day trip: consider visiting early in the morning.
