Arriving from Belize City via the Western Highway, you have to pass through Santa Elena before arriving in the "big" city of San Ignacio. The two cities are considered to be twins and partners, forming the country's second-largest urban agglomeration. But Santa Elena lives somewhat in the shadow of its twin, and has not developed as much. There are a few hotels and restaurants along the road that runs through it, but the majority of residents and street strollers are locals. The town is separated from San Ignacio by the Macal River, and two pretty bridges, one made of wood and the other of red metal, unite them.
