To the east of Tikal, this 370 km2 park is the second most visited in the country. While it is home to a large number of archaeological sites, it owes its name to the three most important: Yaxhá, Nakum and Naranjo. Yaxhá was the capital of a vast territory that dominated the northeastern part of the Petén, although it had strong links with its neighbor, Tikal, and with the cities of Caracol in Belize and Calakmul in Mexico. Particularly pleasant to visit, the site boasts monumental ensembles with pyramidal temples, an acropolis, pelota courts, palaces and residential complexes.
