As interest in the jaguar population emerged in Belize in the 1980s, the state commissioned a study to survey the country's feline population. It became clear that the Cockscomb Basin area had the highest jaguar population density in the world. From then on, hunting was banned in the basin, and in 1986 part of the area was declared a "wildlife protection" reserve by the Belizean government. Over the years, the reserve has expanded its territory. In 1986, the area covered 15 km², and today over 500 km² is protected.
