P-G, as the locals call it, is a small, remote town whose population, although representative of the country's diversity, includes a significant number of Garifuna. While fishing has been the main activity for centuries, many inhabitants are now forced to work on shrimp farms to earn a living. The surrounding small farms, geared to subsistence or the local market, produce rice, mangoes, bananas, sugar cane and beans. Products are exported under the guise of fair trade and organic farming, including cocoa beans.
