This protected nature reserve is an ideal place to observe much of Belize's wildlife. Biologists have discovered more than 100 species of birds, 12 species of reptiles and over 90 species of butterflies living in the reserve. Scientists have also discovered that the Yucatan black howler monkey and the endangered Baird's tapir also live within the reserve's boundaries. But above all, the reserve is home to a cave to be explored, an ancient Mayan sanctuary and burial site, left untouched and visited by crawling through the water, torch in hand. One of the most interesting visits in the country.
