Himmafushi is the first inhabited island north of Hulhumale and is only 17 kilometres from Male. This small island, which can be walked around in 30 minutes at a senatorial pace, has only 850 inhabitants. Major expansion work has doubled its surface area, but the new portion of the island has not yet been exploited. Himmafushi is a typically local island. Its streets are of white sand, without cars, and the vegetation consists mainly of coconut trees. The island traditionally lives from fishing. In the absence of a coral reef, Himmafushi is a surfer's paradise
