In Dhivehi, Dhigurah means long island. Indeed the island is very thin but 3 kilometers long, which is not nothing for the Maldives! Its huge expanse of sand, which extends into a long sandbank barely covered at low tide, makes this island one of the most beautiful local islands in the Maldives. Located in the south of Ari Atoll, 96 kilometres from Malé, the island is home to 600 inhabitants who live mainly in the north of the island. It takes only 15 minutes to walk around the village where there is a school, a medical centre and a large harbour. The rest of the island is covered with vegetation and fields of fruit and vegetables. The western part of the island is covered by a sumptuous lagoon where manta rays can often be seen, even in snorkel gear. In the east of the island, whale sharks, the largest fish in the world, can be seen. Dhigurah is home to some of the most famous Maldivian dive spots: Kuda Rah Thila, Manta Point and Reethi Thila.
