Scientists come in great numbers to study the oldest coral formations in the world, the "stromatolite" corals of Stocking Island, whose origin dates back 3.5 million years, to determine their composition. They are made up of clusters of tiny bacteria, Cyanobacteria, which trap sand to form thin layers of limestone.
