In the district of Commewijne, Meerzorg is a small town across the river from the capital. Since the 2000s, it has been linked by road to Paramaribo by the imposing Jules Wijdenbosch Bridge, named after the former president of Suriname from 1996 to 2000.The town itself isn't very interesting, but you can cycle to the various plantations or take a boat to the capital. Not far from here is the Peperpot plantation, now a private nature reserve: after the bridge towards Albina, 1.8 km on, you'll see a sign "Weg naar Peperpot" (the road to Peperpot).
