Matapica was a site where, like the Galibi reserve, many sea turtles came to lay their eggs. Unfortunately, the beach has recently been washed away by the weather. Nevertheless, the sandy beach has an impressive ability to replenish itself. It's a good idea to check on the spot to see if the site is once again suitable for observing egg-laying (generally from June to September). There are also old plantations on the banks of the Commewijne River, opposite Fort Nieuw Amsterdam. These are worth a visit, as they bear silent witness to a bygone era.
