Originally called Moutende, the small village, created in 1882, now bears the name of its founder, Captain Apatou, of Aluku origin. He was considered as the mediator between the two banks, served as a guide to many explorers and played an important role in the regrouping of ethnic groups on this part of the river. The population (Aluku, Paramaca, Djuka and Saramaca), estimated at about 8,500 inhabitants spread over 250,000 ha, mainly occupies three communes: Patience, Maïman and Apatou. The communication routes are riverine. It is between Apatou and Papaïchton that the biggest jumps of the Maroni are located.
