Created in 1966, this 12,000-hectare reserve is located on some 50 kilometers of coastline between the estuaries of the Coppename and Suriname rivers, within the Saramacca district. Access is relatively easy from Paramaribo, as the reserve is very close to the capital to the west. And, as is often the case, this is the place to be for birdwatchers: birds (notably herons and red ibises), as well as numerous migrants attracted by the natural food reserves provided by the mangroves (crab, shrimp, etc.), and more generally the local fauna (amphibians, mammals and marine animals).
