This town had a railway station, as the project to link Paramaribo to Republiek - Zanderij was launched in 1905. Construction proved to be very difficult, and the 180 km railway was finally completed in 1912. Travel from Paramaribo to the interior was by open carriage at a speed of 25 km/hour. In 1954, the German open wagons were replaced by diesel trains. Gradually, however, traffic declined, and around 1960 the last Paramaribo train disappeared. In the mid-1980s, the same happened to traffic in the rest of Suriname, and the Onverwacht station was also closed.
