A small village in the Saramacca district, Uitkijk lies 20 km west of Paramaribo, on the eastern bank of the Saramacca River. The village is slightly elevated, which makes the land quite dry. It is also a former plantation and military post. Uitkijk does, however, boast a number of tourist and local activities: the wood found in the surrounding area is beautiful and varied. You can kayak on the Saramacca canal or river, where you find yourself in the middle of the Amazon rainforest. Boat trips are also available, as well as horseback riding, not forgetting the famous forest survival courses (ask locally for details).
