Created in 1986, this reserve is renowned for its large collection of palm trees (Mauritia flexuosa) and its extraordinary fauna, with the possibility of spotting blue and yellow Araraunas. Above all, it's the bombardier tree or Hura Crepitans that feels at home in these swamps: this species can reach a height of around sixty meters with a bark covered in thorns, and throws its seeds out at over 250 km/h (which is dangerous for people and animals). The reserve is located in the Coronie district, opposite the mouth of the Coppenname river, in the freshwater section and covers an area of 310 km2.
