In 1388, following the assassination of Everard t Serclaes (Brussels councillor), sponsored by the Lord of Gasbeek, the Brussels, for revenge, besieged the castle and incendièrent. At the beginning of 1500, the Hornes family rebuilt a brick castle on the foundations of the Middle Ages citadel… before having to sell it due to excessive debts. Count Lamoraal of Egmont purchased it in 1565. Governor and General captain of Flanders and Artois, he had his head cut on 5 June 1568 on the Grand-Place in Brussels to protest against the King of Spain Philippe II. The castle was then confiscated.During the following centuries, it was inhabited and rebuilt by powerful families that brought each of the amendments to it. The castle's last square, Marie Present Visconti, was a little resided, but made Gaasbeek a meeting point between artists and intellectuals and restored the castle between 1887 and 1898: He then took his current appearance. The marchioness then left the domain to the Belgian state. Today, it houses an interesting museum with an important collection of works of art and historical objects: furniture, tapestries, etc. A brochure on sale details the contents of the coins. The castle is also located in the centre of a beautiful park (free access), a part of which is decorated in French garden.
