GAASBEEK CASTLE
This superb castle is located in the heart of a region called Pajottenland - to pronounce [payotteunlannt] -, in a landscape of fields and meadows where Pierre Bruegel the Elder loved to go there chewable people and places naar het leven (on the lively). The castle was built in 1236 by the Dukes of Brabant to assert their power and to create a strategic bastion against the frequent attacks of the neighbouring counties of Flanders and Hainaut. The building was then destroyed, rebuilt and restored several times.
