The westernmost town in Hainaut, it's split in two, so to speak: half of Comines lies on the other side of the Belgian border, in France. Within the town itself, there are two well-defined areas: Comines and Warneton. These names of Celtic origin conceal vestiges of Roman times as well as a medieval past. It is the only town in the French Community and Wallonia whose territory was occupied by German (Comines and Warneton) and Allied (Ploegsteert) forces. The memorial inaugurated in 1931 and the British cemeteries bear witness to the history of the Great War in these territories.
