Between Papua New Guinea and Cape York, 274 small islands dot the Torres Strait. Only 17 islands are inhabited for more than 8 000 inhabitants. The most populated is Thursday Island. Murray Island, the subject of the famous Mabo trial, is located at the extreme northern tip of the Great Barrier Reef. This passage, as mythical as it is dangerous for explorers, is named after the Spanish navigator who crossed it in 1605. Before their Christianization in the 1870s, it seems that the islanders were headhunters, just like their cousins in Papua New Guinea. There is a great variety of ecosystems
