Guarujá can pride itself on being one of the oldest cities in the country. As early as January 1502, Amerigo Vespucci landed there. Its development as a seaside resort began in 1892. The city was then connected to São Paulo by a railway, in order to allow the Paulist bourgeoisie to easily go to these pleasant places of holiday.Today it is the largest resort in the state and the closest to São Paulo, two reasons for its chronic overcrowding. The city has 311,000 inhabitants and its population increases tenfold in summer. The most beautiful beaches are just a few kilometres from the city.
