Located about kilometres from São Paulo, Embu's historic little town is the occasion for a pleasant Sunday walk. It is known for its craft shops, which is why in 2011 the supplement, das Artes, was connected to the name of the city. Embu was founded in 1554 by the Jesuits, who lived there with the natives, but most of the ancient buildings date back to the th and th centuries. It is a traditional promenade for the Paulistanos. The city is filled with artists and artisans who present and sell their creations. Here you can discover beautiful restaurants houses, punctuated by vibrant colours, converted into souvenirs and antiques boutiques in the streets of Nossa Senhora do Rosario and Joaquim Santana, a market for trinkets, T-shirts and jewelry, as well as numerous restaurants and bars. A compact and happy crowd goes down in front of the shops, stops to admire a demonstration of capoeira, visit an exhibition of naive paintings, listen to an Andean folk group or a musician practicing on a berimbau.
