Bertioga (56,000 inhabitants), 118 km from São Paulo, is the starting point of the Rio-Santos road that runs along the northern coast of the state to Rio. Some beaches and the Fort of São João are the local attractions. Fort São João, built in 1547, is considered the first fortress in Brazil. It is a historical place that can be visited and ends with a beautiful view of the Bertioga Canal, postcard of the city.The Itatinga village is another heritage of Bertioga and is part of the history of Brazil. Built in 1910, it houses the first hydroelectric power plant in the country and continues to provide energy to the port of Santos.
