In the 16th century, the Tupinambá were already living in the territory of Caraguatatuba. At that time, the site was known as a fertile land. The bromeliad plant, whose fibers were used by the missionaries to make their sandals, gave birth to the name Caraguá;, the suffix tuba, meaning large quantity;. The city was for a long time an essentially agricultural town. In 1939, the road connecting Paraibuna to Caraguatatuba was opened to traffic and, causing an economic and human air appeal. Tourism began to develop. Today it is one of the 15 seaside resorts in the state.
