This small town of almost 40,000 inhabitants is located on the Costa Verde, halfway between Rio and São Paulo. Set in an exceptional natural setting, Paraty, or Parati, is nestled between a magnificent bay of nearly 65 islands, and the Mata Atlântica forest that plunges down from the hills of the Sierra da Bocaina National Park. The scenery is enchanting. But Paraty is undoubtedly a jewel of Brazilian tourism for its history and old stones. Travellers from all over the world visit its extraordinarily well-preserved historic center, built during the gold fever era and listed as a Unesco World Heritage Site.
